27 Viking Way, Bird River, Manitoba.

This log cabin is located approximately one and a half hours northeast from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and just before the Bird River bridge.  You are at the doorstep of Nopiming Provincial Park and in the heart of the Canadian Shield from this location.  Whether it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter, each new season brings different outdoor activities to be enjoyed.  The nearest townsite is Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba and you can get there by land or water.

The log cabin was built upon a natural granite ridge that rises about one hundred and twenty-five feet above the Bird River valley.  Being at this elevation above the river often leaves people with a quiet appreciation of the rugged landscape, or with the comment, "this is a million dollar view".  Venturing down the granite ridge has certain steep areas and also what feels like walking through a rain forest as you reach the Bird River on this property.  At the shoreline there is a forty-five foot dock and includes a winch to help lift the dock frame out of the water before winter ice.  Fisheries and Oceans has also approved the owner to place pea stone on top of the clay in the river bottom.

The interior of the cabin is all log and the trees to build this cottage were harvested from Kenora, Ontario.  A great room greets you as you enter this log structure with a large living room appointed with pine plank flooring to maintain the rustic ambiance of the cabin and the rugged Canadian Shield country.  A kitchen with an adequate working island allows everyone to be engaged in conversation when hosting friends and family.  Off of the kitchen is a patio door that leads you into a floor to cathedral ceiling screened gazebo.  This open space literally allows you to experience the full impact of the outdoors, the panoramic view of the Bird River valley, and yet avoid the annoyance of biting insects.  Often at night you can watch Brown Bats fly by as they feast on mosquito's, or hear a pack of Timber Wolves eerie howls break the silence of the dark forest.

Through the screen door of the gazebo leads you onto a large deck that follows parallel to the log cabin along the eastside.  The log cottage also features three bedrooms and a loft area ideal for additional storage or sleeping quarters.  The property also includes a three piece seasonal bathroom where water is drawn from the river for the shower.

The log cabin is on pad and post on top of the stone from the granite ridge.  A metal storage shed is also included.  The property itself is on Hydro leased land.  At the time of writing this blog post; Manitoba Hydro is in the process of surveying and appraising the land on Viking Way to give the property owners the option to continue leasing from Hydro, or buying the land at fair market value.

The log has been vacant for several years and does require some tender loving care.  With some elbow grease and repairs it wouldn't take much to shine this diamond in the rough.  There are sixty-four kilometers of uninterrupted waterways if you are an angler, or boating enthusiast.  During the winter this entire area boasts some of the best sledding trails in the entire province of Manitoba.  For more information, or if you wish to view this log cabin, please contact Rolf Hitzer at Royal Lepage Top Producers, 1-204-989-6900.
